The Summer Student employee will assist library staff with a large-scale shifting project to reorganize and optimize space within the library’s physical collections. This position requires attention to detail, physical stamina, and the ability to follow organizational systems accurately.
Key Responsibilities
• Shift and reorganize books within designated areas of the library
• Maintain proper shelf order according to Library of Congress classification system
• Accurately read and interpret call numbers
• Move, lift, and transport books and materials between shelves and locations
• Assist with shelf reading to ensure materials are in correct order
• Identify and report missing, damaged, or mis-shelved items
• Keep work areas neat and organized during the shifting process
• Follow instructions and complete tasks within established timelines
Student earnings will be paid biweekly in the form of a check or direct deposit payable to the student.
• Ability to follow detailed instructions and work independently
• Strong attention to detail and organizational skills
• Ability to read alphanumeric sequences accurately
• Dependable and punctual
Physical Requirements
• Ability to lift 25–40 pounds
• Ability to stand, bend, stretch, and move for extended periods
• Comfortable working in tight or confined shelving spaces
Preferred Qualifications
• Previous library or shelving experience
• Familiarity with Library of Congress
